How does my student get their Minnesota instruction permit?

In Minnesota, students first complete the required 30-hour classroom driver education course. After completing classroom instruction, the student must enroll with a behind-the-wheel driver education program. The behind-the-wheel provider then submits the required school verification (commonly referred to as the “blue card”) to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Once this verification is submitted, the student may schedule and take the permit knowledge test.

Does Milestone Driving Academy offer classroom driver education?

Milestone Driving Academy specializes in behind-the-wheel instruction and does not provide classroom driver education. Students may complete the required classroom portion through any approved Minnesota driver education provider. After completing the 30-hour classroom course, the provider will issue a certificate of completion. This certificate must be provided to Milestone Driving Academy before the required school verification (commonly referred to as the “blue card”) can be submitted for the student.

When should my student schedule behind-the-wheel lessons?

Families are encouraged to begin planning behind-the-wheel instruction early. Scheduling may begin even before the student has completed the classroom portion of driver education. During the parent consultation, we will review the student’s timeline and develop a plan for scheduling lessons that supports steady skill development and progression.

Does my student need to have their permit before starting lessons?

Yes. Students must possess a valid Minnesota instruction permit before participating in behind-the-wheel instruction. However, lessons are often scheduled well in advance. During the parent consultation, we will review the student’s timeline and plan instruction accordingly.

How are the six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction scheduled?

Minnesota law requires a minimum of six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and limits instruction to no more than two hours per day. Because of this, lessons are scheduled across multiple sessions. During the parent consultation, we will review the student’s timeline and develop a plan for scheduling the lessons.

Where do behind-the-wheel lessons begin and end?

Lesson start and end locations are coordinated during the parent consultation. Depending on the schedule, lessons may begin and end at the student’s home or school. Location details are confirmed as part of the lesson plan.

Do you only work with students in Eagan and District 196?

Milestone Driving Academy primarily serves students and families across the South Metro, including Eagan, Apple Valley, Rosemount, Burnsville, and District 196. In some cases, we may work with students outside this area depending on scheduling, location, and overall fit.

What does my student need to bring to a behind-the-wheel lesson?

Students must bring their valid Minnesota instruction permit to every lesson. State law requires the permit to be in the student’s possession while operating a vehicle. If a student arrives without their permit, the lesson will be considered a missed appointment under the cancellation policy.

How much does the Teen Driver Program cost?

The Teen Driver Program includes six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction for students in Eagan, Apple Valley, Rosemount, Burnsville, and surrounding South Metro communities. The program investment is $450. Enrollment begins with a brief parent consultation to review scheduling, discuss the student’s timeline, and determine whether the program is the right fit.

What happens if we need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?

Because lesson times are reserved specifically for each student, cancellations or rescheduling requests must be made at least twenty-four (24) hours in advance. Requests made with less than twenty-four (24) hours’ notice are considered late cancellations and result in a $50 cancellation fee. The fee must be paid before future lessons can be scheduled. Students must bring their valid Minnesota instruction permit to every lesson. If a student arrives without their permit, the lesson will be considered a missed appointment under the cancellation policy.

What happens if weather conditions are unsafe?

Behind-the-wheel instruction may be delayed, modified, or rescheduled due to weather or road conditions. Safety decisions are made by the instructor based on current driving conditions. Learning to drive in a variety of conditions is an important part of developing safe and confident drivers. If conditions are safe for instruction, lessons may still proceed during light rain, snow, or typical Minnesota weather. If a lesson cannot be completed due to unsafe weather or road conditions, the lesson will be rescheduled at no additional cost.
